Aurelius quote

Some advice from my favorite Stoic, Marcus Aurelius, that I ran across today:

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

It’s a great, a favorite of mine. It’s thoroughly Stoic, but I can find no evidence that Marcus Aurelius ever stated it. The attribution appears to be a mistake that’s gone viral on the internet.

      1. Yes,! I couldn’t find it in his Meditation, but I figured I just had missed it. I agree, however: it is a beautiful quote and thoroughly Stoic.
